International Relations

The major in International Relations provides a broad, interdisciplinary education that will equip students for a wide variety of careers. Many of our students have gone on to excel in public service, including careers with local, state, and national governments, and with international and non-governmental organizations. Others have entered the private sector in fields as diverse as banking and finance, consulting, business, journalism, law, marketing, and higher education. The curriculum is designed to expose students to topics that cut across a range of disciplines while also allowing specialization in a student's area of interest.

Political Science

The major in Political Science provides the skills of political analysis and a disciplined education that equips students for a wide variety of careers. The program is designed to: (1) encourage analysis of political theories, institutions, and processes within the broader context of the social sciences; (2) develop a continuing and responsible interest in political participation and public affairs; (3) provide the opportunity to acquire a fundamental understanding of political science as a basis for citizenship, a career in government or the private sector, or graduate study in various fields. The curriculum exposes students to various topics within Political Science while also allowing reasonable specialization in a student's area of interest.

Portuguese

The FIU Portuguese major develops students' ability to speak and write the language with fluency and proficiency, including classes on Luso-Brazilian culture, literature, cinema, business language, grammar, oral performance. The department also offers an optional Summer Study Abroad Program in Brazil to develop the student's language skills and cultural exposure, besides a minor and a certificate in Portuguese. Our Portuguese Program is a Celpe-Bras Proficiency Exam testing center accredited by the Brazil's Ministry of Education. Opportunities in the areas of business, diplomacy, government, tourism, education, media, international relations, can be part of students' future careers, either in Florida, the U.S.'s number one trade partner of Brazil, in the U.S. where a significant number of important Brazilian companies are based, or in the global marketplace.

The Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA) degree is offered for students interested in beginning or continuing a public service career and for those who wish to continue in public administration at the graduate level. Coursework in policy analysis and implementation, community and urban development, and fiscal management prepares students for careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. The Religious Studies major serves as a basis for students who wish to pursue the study of religion or theology as a career, for students preparing for a career in counseling, education, business, politics, law or medicine, or for students who wish to undertake a dual major in a related field. The major is designed to allow students to focus either on comparative topics, using a critical approach to understanding religious phenomena and their relation to society in a broad cultural context, or on the theory and practice of a specific religious tradition in its historical setting.
